A few of the stages are standouts that I found especially fun, at least at first. In the Super Monkey Ball stage for example, you're charged with knocking monkey balls through gates by serving tennis balls at them. Some of the stages use their namesakes fairly well, challenging you to use your button-pressing skills to achieve objectives in a manner appropriate to the theme of the stage. At first, making your way through the loosely tennis-based games is fun, but many of the stages drag on and the countless variations on the same themes begin to drag quickly. Here, you'll unlock new characters - like Gilius the non-textured Golden Axe dwarf, Pudding from Space Channel 5 and Alex Kidd - and open new mini-game areas. Most of your time will be spent playing mini-games in a variety of different SEGA-themed areas. ![]() Although there is a short tournament mode (I plowed through it in less than 30 minutes), there is no career mode as there would be in a standard tennis game. You can use this motley crew to jump into quick-play tennis matches, either locally or online, or you can start whittling away at the mini-games that form the backbone of SEGA Superstars Tennis. Eggman from the Sonic the Hedgehog series AiAi from Super Monkey Ball NiGHTS Ulala from Space Channel 5 Beat from Jet Set Radio and Amigo from Samba de Amigo. SSST starts you off with eight playable characters from the SEGA universe: Sonic, Tails and Dr. Although there are 16 SEGA characters to be found within its mini-games, bracketed tournaments and, yes, even more mini-games, Superstars stops short of delivering either a top-notch tennis party game or an all-out Sega fan-fest. But even - and maybe especially - hardcore SEGA aficionados will probably find SEGA Superstars Tennis disappointing. If you count yourself among the Sega faithful, you'll find a lot to like in SEGA Superstars Tennis, the latest title from Sumo Digital, the UK-based Foundation 9 studio responsible for developing past Sega properties like Virtua Tennis 3 and OutRun 2006. The learning curve is fairly gentle and all in all, this is a well presented, lovely game that offers plenty to do and doesn’t force anyone out of the living room.Like any underdog worth its salt, SEGA has gathered in its wake an army of diehard fans who can't get enough Sonic the Hedgehog, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5 and even the original SEGA mascot, Alex Kidd himself. Odd glitches seems to have slipped through the testing stages (you may suddenly fail at the very start for a game without touching anything), but they don’t seem to be repeatable. The game is presented graphically well, with decent sound and music. It’s a fun game for all the family much similar to Wii Sports’ Tennis, but with added unlockables and familiar Sega faces for those who like a bit more depth. You can choose to be a Sega geek, in other words, or just plug n’ play. ![]() If that isn’t a concern for you, there’s also a ‘quickstart’ option which will launch you into a tennis game with the selected number of players. There’s stuff to earn and achieve throughout the game for those players who like to gain something for their time. The game features unlockable music tracks from Sega games such as S onic the Hedgehog, Jet Set Radio Future, Space Channel Five, Monkey Ball, House of the Dead and more, as well as unlockable characters from similar games. Mum can join in with little super-geek Johnny, but watch out for Grandma as she’ll want in on the action as well. This character-familiar concept makes for a fun game for those familiar with the characters and games of the past, yet you can enjoy them equally simply if you’ve never touched a Sega game in your life. ![]() There’s even a House of the Dead court where the mini games involve hitting balls into zombies! No blood though – slashes and bites are ‘green’ and you don’t see anything gross taking place at all. Ai Ai has a minigame where he needs to serve the tennis balls at big monkey-balls to knock them into a goal. For example, Sonic has a minigame where he needs to collect rings whilst dodging spiky balls which are being served at him by big robots. In addition though, Sega Superstar Tennis has a variety of minigames which, depending on which of the themed courts you’re playing on, takes that theme and produces a minigame. It’s remarkably similar to Wii Sports Tennis if you just want to grab three friends or family members and serve a few sets of tennis.
